FMS Math Team posts strong showing in state contest

The Francis Marion Math team, composed of 12 members ranging from 9th to 12th grade, competed in the 2023 Alabama Statewide High School Math Contest on February 25th. The team individually competed by taking a multiple- choice written test at the University of Alabama along with students from Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Marion, Pickens, Perry, Sumter, and Tuscaloosa County in 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A divisions. The team sponsors were Mrs. Jocelyn Turner, Mrs. Stephanie Williams, and Mr. John Bolding. The team members were as follows: Alivya Tobin, Emily Stabler, Jade Turner, John Bates, Kalese Lapsley, Kelvin Acoff, Martaja Powell, Michael Essex, Mya Thomas, Nia Turner, Stan’Qresha Jones, and Tanireah Bates.

The Algebra II team, composed of the 11th graders, placed 9th out of 15 teams in their division Nia Turner placed in the top 25% of all the Algebra II competitors with a 12th place finish out of approximately 50 competitors.

The Geometry team, composed of the 9th and 10th graders, placed 4th out of 11 teams in their division. They were the District 3 winners out of all divisions. John Bates and Stan’Qresha Jones placed in the top 25% of all Geometry competitors. John was 11th and Stan’Qresha was 12th.
