Hale County Hospital’s Dietary Department has thrived under the leadership of its Dietary Director, Maria King. Originally from Connecticut, Maria joined the department in February 2024. Passionate about cooking since the age of eight, she has brought a fresh perspective and energy to the role.

Nourishing Our Neighbors

The Dietary Department is a crucial part of the hospital’s commitment to the wellbeing of the community. Preparing around 300 meals each week, the team ensures that every dish is not only nutritious but also thoughtfully tailored to meet the dietary needs of each patient. “We make sure the food is presentable and healthy, and that each patient’s diet is correct,” Maria emphasizes the importance of personal connections in her work. By taking the time to get to know each patient, the department adds a special touch that enhances their comfort and overall experience. “Food keeps people going, so we always follow up with patients to make sure they’re satisfied and well taken care of,” she shares

Hale County Hospital is known for its strong sense of community. “This hospital is a family setting,” the director explains. “People know each other, and that makes a big difference.” This close-knit atmosphere extends into the Dietary Department, where the staff’s dedication to their neighbors creates a welcoming environment that feels like home.

Looking to the future, the director envisions the Dietary Department expanding its reach beyond the hospital. “I’d love to see us serving the community by selling food at the hospital for the public,” she says. This initiative would allow the hospital to give back even more to the community it serves, offering healthy, home-cooked meals to everyone.

For Maria, the most rewarding part of her job is the opportunity to care for the people she serves. “I love cooking and I love people,” she says.
