Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5

Electors in Hale will vote on President, Probate Judge along with some other offices

In the upcoming general election, set for Tuesday, Nov. 5, there will be several key races be on the ballot in Perry County.

For the presidential election, voters will have multiple candidates to choose from. Kamala D. Harris and Tim Walz are running on the Democratic ticket, while Donald J. Trump and JD Vance represent the Republican Party. Independent candidates include Robert F. Kennedy Jr. with running mate Nicole Shanahan, Chase Oliver with Mike Ter Maat, and Jill Stein with Samson Komlan-LeBeau Kpadenou.

Locally, Judge Robert D. Bryant, a Democrat, is running unopposed for re-election as District Court Judge. Additionally, incumbent Judge Collins Pettaway Jr., also a Democrat, is the sole candidate for Circuit Court Judge, 4th Judicial Circuit, Place No. 1.

Voters will also be selecting members for the Board of Education and County Commission. Eulas Kirtdoll Sr., a Democrat, is running unopposed for the District No. 1 seat on the Perry County Board of Education, while Cheryle L. Thomas, also a Democrat, is the sole candidate for District No. 2.

For the County Commission, Barbara Howze is running unopposed as a Democrat for the District No. 4 seat. In District No. 5, Carlton “Carl” Lewis, a Democrat, faces two Independent candidates, Ben Eaton and Fernando Raby.

The race for Circuit Clerk in Perry County features Democrat Mia Jacobs- Turner as the sole candidate. Additionally, Carlton L. Hogue, also a Democrat, is running unopposed for the position of Perry County Judge of Probate.

In statewide races, several Alabama Supreme Court positions are up for election. For Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Place 1, Chris McCool, a Republican, is running unopposed. The Place 2 race features Republican candidate Tommy Bryan, who also faces no opposition. In Place 3, Will Sellers, a Republican, stands as the sole candidate, as does Jay Mitchell for Place 4.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court race presents a choice between Greg Griffin, a Democrat, and Sarah Stewart, a Republican. Additionally, voters in Alabama’s 7th Congressional District will choose between Democratic incumbent Terri A. Sewell and Republican Robin Litaker for United States Representative.

On the judicial side, Perry County voters will weigh in on several positions for the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals and Court of Criminal Appeals. For the Court of Civil Appeals, Christy Edwards, Chad Hanson, and Terry A. Moore, all Republicans, are running unopposed for Places 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

In the Court of Criminal Appeals races, Republican candidates Richard Minor, Rich Anderson, and Bill Cole are running unopposed for Places 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

For the position of President of the Public Service Commission, Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, a Republican, is the only candidate on the ballot. Additionally, voters in State Board of Education District No. 5 will choose between Democrat Tonya Smith Chestnut and Republican David W. Perry.

The Perry County ballot will also include a statewide amendment. Voters will decide on Statewide Amendment 1, which proposes a change to the Alabama Constitution of 2022. This amendment would allow certain school lands owned by the Franklin County school system, located in Fayette and Walker Counties, to be used exclusively for the Franklin County School System. Additionally, it would ensure that any proceeds or interest generated from this land are distributed directly to the Franklin County Board of Education. This amendment is proposed by Act 2024-301.
