Alphonzo Bennett

Alphonzo Bennett, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 67. Born on May 8, 1957, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to Arthur and Mamie Bennett, Alphonzo grew up in a vibrant household filled with love and laughter, alongside his brothers Christopher and Donald.

His early years in Ypsilanti laid the foundation for a life characterized by devotion to family, unwavering faith, and a commitment to serving others. Alphonzo’s educational journey began at Mumford High School in Detroit, where he graduated with the class of 1975. He went on to further his education at Ferris State College in Big Rapids, Michigan, earning an associate degree that would serve as a stepping stone to a successful career.

While at Ferris State, he embraced brotherhood and service through his active involvement with the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, an organization that would remain close to his heart throughout his life.

Professionally, Alphonzo found his calling as an insurance agent, a role in which he not only excelled but also touched the lives of countless individuals with his integrity, empathy, and expertise. His dedication to his career was recognized in 1996 when he was honored by Trustmark as one of the TOP 10 Agents in his office— a testament to his hard work and the high esteem in which he was held by both colleagues and clients.

Alphonzo’s personal life was anchored by his deep faith, which he expressed through his lifelong membership and participation in New Prospect Baptist Church in Detroit. On September 10, 1983, Alphonzo united in marriage with his beloved wife, Darline Bennett. Their loving partnership was blessed with two wonderful children, Victor and Chyna, and eventually, three adored grandchildren.

Alphonzo’s role as a family man was one he cherished above all else, and his unwavering support, guidance, and affection for his family were the hallmarks of his character. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Darline; their children, Victor and Chyna; three beloved grandchildren; brothers, Christopher and Donald (Donna); and a host of aunts, cousins, and friends. Each of these individuals was touched by Alphonzo’s kindness, strength, and compassion, and they will carry forward his legacy of love and service. We take comfort in knowing that Alphonzo’s spirit lives on, not just in our thoughts and stories, but in the love that binds us together as a family and community.
