ADEM cites landfill in Uniontown for ‘significant’ wastewater violations

Arrowhead Landfill in Uniontown has recently been cited by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), for significant non-compliance with wastewater discharge standards over the past year. A public notice placed by ADEM regarding the matter is included in the “Legal Notices” section of this week’s newspaper.

Located at 622 Tayloe Road, the landfill’s operations have been found to exceed the allowable limits for wastewater discharge into the Demopolis Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) during the fiscal year 2023. This violation was identified through technical review criteria set by federal regulations, specifically 40 CFR 403.8(f)(2)(viii)(B).

ADEM’s notice, made public on July 17, 2024, aims to inform residents and stakeholders about these environmental infractions. The announcement has sparked concern among community members who rely on the integrity of local waste management practices to protect their environment and health.

Residents now have the opportunity to submit their comments and concerns in writing to ADEM within 30 days of the notice. These comments should address the landfill’s compliance with environmental laws and include the permit number IU395300144.
