The historic Uniontown United Methodist Church, located at the intersection of Highway 61 and North Street, was officially closed on Monday during the annual meeting of the Alabama- West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. The closure is part of a broader decision affecting ten churches in Alabama and Florida, which were shuttered due to declining attendance and financial challenges, church officials said.
The Uniontown United Methodist Church, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Uniontown Historic District, was originally built in 1858. This twostory Greek Revival-style brick building has been a significant landmark in Perry County. The church’s stained-glass windows were added in 1921, and a new steeple was installed in 1971.
The decision to close the Uniontown church, along with six other Alabama churches and three in the Florida Panhandle, was described by the conference as necessary due to prolonged declines in membership and attendance.
