Sammie Lee Carson, a 27-year-old inmate at the James Hood Detention Facility in Perry County, has been charged with promoting prison contraband in the third degree. The complaint alleges that Carson unlawfully possessed and used a contraband item within the facility over a three-day period, from Nov. 20 to Nov. 22.
According to the complaint, Carson used a blue Motorola cell phone in his dormitory cell, specifically Cell 167, which had been hidden behind the back of the television. The possession and use of the cell phone violate detention facility regulations and state law.
The phone, considered contraband, is classified as an item that could disrupt security and operations within the facility. Carson was formally arrested on Nov. 25, with a bond set at $3,000.
