Montgomery mayor will be guest of honor at Jimmie Lee Jackson Day

Marion will mark the 61st observance of Jimmie Lee Jackson Day on Sunday, February 15, with a program honoring the legacy of the local civil rights martyr and celebrating the anniversary of the Perry County Civic League.

This year’s ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at Marion Baptist Academy, 315 Centreville Street in Marion. The event is sponsored by the Perry County Civic League, which was formed in the 1960s to advance voting rights and civic participation in Perry County and has continued that work for more than six decades.

The Honorable Steven Reed, mayor of Montgomery, has been named the 2026 Drum Major for Justice recipient and will be the featured honoree at this year’s program. The Drum Major for Justice recognition is presented each year to a leader whose work reflects the courage and commitment to justice associated with Jackson’s legacy.

The event is open to the public, and residents from across Perry County and surrounding areas are invited to attend.
