MPD arrests Marion man for attempted bank robbery

Michael Mashrah, 32, turned himself in Sunday.

Marion Police Department has arrested Michael Mashrah, 32, for the attempted robbery of Marion Community Bank’s Washington Street location on Thursday.

Mashrah is originally from the Dearborn, Mich. area but has lived in Alabama for a number of years, mostly in the Marion area. Mashrah reportedly turned himself in on the charges on Sunday afternoon, May 29. Upon his arrest, Mashrah was charged with robbery. He is being held pending a bond hearing.

According to police reports, Mashrah entered the bank and handed tellers a note demanding money. Tellers at their stations triggered the bank’s silent alarm, notifying police of the robbery in progress. Mashrah was reportedly unarmed, though it is believed he deceived the bank’s tellers about that fact.

Mashrah has family in the area, including a girlfriend, who Marion Police Chief Tony Bufford said turned him in on the crime when she suspected his involvement.
