Uniontown council declares Domestic Violence Awareness Month Monday

At the City Council meeting on Monday October 3rd, Portia Shepard approached the City Council with a request that October be declared Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the City of Uniontown to align with the movement across the nation Domestic Violence Month was launched nationwide in October 1987 as a way to connect individuals and organizations working on domestic violence issues while raising awareness for those issues. October is recognized as such across the nation and in many different communities in the State of Alabama. Shepard announced she had already planned some events to incorporate the month into the community. On October 29th there will be a Candlelight Vigil across from the Stockyard where a local survivor will speak. Shepard asked that the city help her by recognizing the month and declaring it from here forward in the City of Uniontown. The motion was passed.
