Earnest Williams, Perry County folk artist, dies

This photo comes from the Sept. 6, 2006 print edition of the Perry County Herald: “Marion folk artist Earnest Williams was one of the highlights of the Alabama Highway 14 Antique Trail held along the state highway this past weekend.”

Earnest Williams of rural Perry County passed away on April 6. He was an accomplished folk artist who first gained recognition in the early 2000s. Working from Marion, Williams was joined by a number of his family members, as well as fellow artist, the late Don Coley, in creating, for a time, a thriving folk art studio here.

He produced an extensive collection of paintings and mixed media creations over the next two decades.

Williams’ artwork was widely celebrated, and he exhibited work in shows and galleries throughout the country.

A viewing was held on Friday, April 14, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. A graveside service took place the following day on April 15, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Cemetery on Woodlawn Church Road.
