Police say man stole banking info from Berean Head Start, went online shopping

A Mississippi man has been arrested this week on felony charges of first-degree theft of property in Perry County. Travis L. Powe, age 56, of Waynesboro, Miss., was reportedly arrested and booked into Perry County Jail on the charge as of Monday, June 12.

A criminal complaint in Perry County District Court, signed by Marion Police Corporal Jeremy Mims, alleges that Powe stole money from Berean Baptist Head Start in Marion.

The complaint says Powe “did on or about the months of May 2022 through October 2022… knowingly obtain, by deception, unauthorized control over property (money) with intent to deprive the owner of said property.” The complaint goes on to allege that Powe used the bank routing and account information for Berean Baptist Head Start to purchase various items online, spending in excess of $2,500.00.

Perry County District Judge Robert Bryant set Powe’s bond at $5,000.00. As of press time, it was unclear whether Powe had yet bonded out on the charges.
