Newbern man reportedly arrested for shooting Sunday

A Newbern man was reportedly arrested Sunday afternoon, Aug. 6 for a shooting that happened in Marion early that morning.

No complaint has yet been filed related to the incident in Perry County criminal court, but according to initial reports, the alleged shooter was Marquis Perkins, 29, of Newbern. He was reportedly taken into custody and charged with attempted murder that afternoon. The victim’s injuries were reportedly serious enough to require surgery. No further information has been reported as of press time.

The shooting incident reportedly grew out of a fight that began at a nightclub in downtown Marion, then moved to the Marion Citgo convenience store, where the shooting happened. The incident took place adjacent to the campus of Marion Military Institute, which had just begun to welcome students back for the new school year over the weekend.

The shooting reportedly happened between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. on Sunday.
