Perry County fifth graders’ math proficiency rose to 38.89 percent, Wallace say

Math proficiency among Perry County fifth graders rose from 3.57 percent in the 2022-23 school year to 38.89 percent in 2024-25, Wallace Community College Selma said in an Oct. 1 story on its website.

Third and fourth graders gained over the same years, the college said. Third-grade proficiency went from 19.15 percent to 43.64 percent, and fourth-grade proficiency from 3.85 percent to 14.93 percent.

The figures come from an Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative presentation on the school-based math coaches Perry County hired for the 2023-24 school year, the story said.

Each grade improved in each year, according to the story. In 2023-24, proficiency was 24.29 percent in third grade, 11.63 percent in fourth and 17.39 percent in fifth.

The story says the data do not establish that the coaching alone caused the gains.

Wallace and Alabama State University are an AMSTI regional site that supports kindergarten through 12th-grade math and science teachers in the region, the college said. Francis Marion School credited the gains to its students, its teachers and the AMSTI partnership.
