Marion native elected bishop in CME Church

Richard D. Shaw

The Rev. Dr. Richard D. Shaw, a Marion native, has been elected the 70th bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the nation’s historically Black Methodist denominations.

Shaw was elected on the second ballot at the church’s 41st General Conference, held June 13–19 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. The General Conference, which the denomination holds every four years, elects bishops by a majority vote of its clergy and lay delegates to serve until retirement.

Shaw is the son of the late Norma Rene Shaw of Marion and a graduate of Francis Marion High School.

He has served as pastor of St. Matthew CME Church in Milwaukee since 2010 and has worked in CME ministry for nearly three decades.

In Milwaukee, he also serves as president of MICAH, an interfaith community organizing group, as well as a chaplain and campus minister.
