As a part of Discover Alabama Extension Week, September 15-September 21, The Perry County Extension Office held its Annual Open House, themed “Lights, Camera, Open House,” attracting community members eager to learn about the valuable educational resources available to them.
On Wednesday, September 18, 10 am- 2 pm, County Extension Coordinator Katrina Easley opened the event, warmly welcoming attendees and emphasizing the Extension’s commitment to serving the community. “This event is all about showcasing the programs we offer and how they can benefit our residents,” Easley stated. “We’re here to empower individuals and families in various aspects of life.”
Participants had the opportunity to explore booths with multiple program areas, including financial management, agriculture, human sciences, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), and 4-H Youth Development. Each booth featured displays and informative materials, making it easy for attendees to engage with the various offerings. Some of the booths included were,
A Blast from the Past, which showcased publications from the early 1960s and included vintage cookbooks and food preservation manuals.
The Financial Management Booth highlighted the interactive youth program “ Your Money, Your life “ which is a financial simulation for youth in grades 7- 12 sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension. Participants pretend to be young adults with occupations, salaries, and often have a family. They move through the simulation with volunteers role-playing various scenarios. It is through the activity that students learn personal financial management.
The Human Sciences Booth which held information focused on family wellness and nutrition caught the attention of many, showcasing practical tips for healthier living.
The Agriculture Booth was geared towards information on how to submit soil or hay/forage samples and gardening. Fresh cherry tomatoes was given to participants to encourage growing one’s own fruits and vegetables.
The Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) Booth highlighted programs designed to educate families about making healthy food choices while staying within budget.
The 4-H Youth Development Booth focused on how 4-H introduces youth to leadership opportunities and hands-on projects, highlighting the program’s role in developing the next generation of community leaders.
The Open House not only served as an educational platform but also as a networking opportunity, allowing community members to connect with one another and Extension staff. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciations for the educational resources available.
As the event concluded, Mrs. Katrina Easley thanked everyone for their participation, reiterating the Extension Office’s mission to support and enrich the Perry County community. “We are excited to continue providing these programs and look forward to seeing you at future events,” she said.
