Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a total of $4.5 million in Community Services Block Grants to agencies across Alabama, including funding that supports anti-poverty programs serving both Hale and Perry counties.
Funding for West Alabama Region
Community Service Programs of West Alabama Inc., which serves a 10-county region including Hale County and Perry County, was awarded $442,565 to continue its work helping low-income residents move toward economic self-sufficiency. The agency’s service area also includes Bibb, Choctaw, Dallas, Fayette, Greene, Lamar, Sumter and Tuscaloosa counties.
Purpose of the Grants
In announcing the grants, Ivey said the funding is aimed at families and individuals who are struggling to gain a financial foothold. The money will support local programs that help people secure and maintain employment, improve budgeting and money-management skills, and provide emergency assistance with basic needs such as health care, food and housing.
Administration of the Funds
The grants are being administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) using federal funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said the goal is to give residents “a hand up” and help them take control of their finances through locally run programs tailored to community needs.
