Branching Out: Forestry Commission Gives Away Trees at Piggly Wiggly

Community members gathered Tuesday, March 3rd at Marion Piggly Wiggly for the Alabama Forestry Commission’s Annual Tree Giveaway, an event aimed at promoting conservation and encouraging residents to enhance their home landscapes with native species.

Among the volunteers offering support was Katrina Easley, Perry County Extension Director, along with staff from the Perry County Extension Office. Easley and her team assisted with distributing a wide selection of young trees made available to the public at no cost.

Tree Species Offered

This year’s giveaway featured several popular and ecologically valuable species, including:

  • White Dogwood
  • Southern Crab Apple
  • Sassafras
  • Persimmon
  • Black Tupelo
  • Ginkgo
  • White Oak
  • Loblolly Pine

Community Engagement and Environmental Stewardship

“This event is always a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community and support environmental stewardship,” Easley said. “Planting trees not only beautifies our county but also strengthens our local ecosystem for future generations.”

Residents arrived steadily throughout the event, many expressing appreciation for the chance to add new trees to their yards and properties. The Alabama Forestry Commission hosts the annual giveaway as part of its ongoing efforts to promote reforestation, conservation education, and sustainable land management practices.
