Shooting at Texaco ends in Marion’s first murder of 2024

A shooting in the early morning hours of Thursday, Feb. 8 has ended in Marion’s first murder of 2024. A criminal complaint filed in Perry County District Court on Monday, Feb. 12 names Oliver Lewis Kynard, 46, as the suspect in the shooting death of Terrance T. Shaw, 30.

The incident occurred at the Texaco gas station on Washington Street in Marion, near the campus of Marion Military Institute. According to the complaint, Kynard shot Shaw “multiple times” with a 9mm pistol. The complaint estimates that the shooting took place at around 1:04 a.m. early that Thursday morning.

According to court records, Kynard remains in Perry County Jail pending an Aniah’s Law hearing set for Feb. 20 before District Judge Robert Bryant. At this hearing, the judge will determine if Kynard should be eligible to be released on bond, and, if so, likely set the bond amount as well.

The victim, Terrance Shaw, had himself been charged with capital murder in Perry County in 2017. Court records indicate those charges were dismissed by the State in December of that year.
