The Engle Gallery of Greensboro is pleased to present an exhibition of works by celebrated Alabama artist Trés Taylor. The show will be on display at the Engle Gallery Annex, located at Evelyn B&B, 1404 Tuscaloosa Street, from May 15 through June 15.
Trés Taylor is a contemporary self-taught painter living in Selma, Alabama. With a unique artistic journey, Taylor was a biochemist for over twenty years before, after a visit with Southern artist R.A. Miller in 1998, he was inspired to begin his journey as a visual artist.
Taylor’s distinctive work has garnered critical acclaim throughout his career. Taylor’s paintings have been described as “expressing a simplicity that is the essence of life.” More recently, critic Daniel A. Burr noted that “Taylor’s naïve style of representation is wonderfully offset by the drama of his color scheme and the sophistication of his composition.”
His medium is house paints and acrylics on roofing paper textured by putty and sealed with varnish. His subjects are usually monks, couples, and houses, and range from the simple image of a monk solemnly holding flowers to extended murals depicting journeys taken through relationships, life, and the world around us.
His simple imagery, combined with rich texture and colors, creates a unique style. While his imagery is simple, there is a deeper spiritual level in all his works.
Taylor’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and can be found in several collections including Dupont Pioneer of Des Moines, IA, the Hurn Museum of Contemporary Folk Art in Savannah, GA, and is on display at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama. He was “Featured Artist” at the 2016 La Quinta Arts Festival in California and the 2013 Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver.
The artist has a special connection to the Greensboro area, having painted murals in small towns across Alabama’s Black Belt region, with completed murals in Birmingham, Greensboro, and Selma.
